Classroom Modules

Module 1

In module one, students will begin to explore the components of the nature of science and scientific inquiry. We will lay the groundwork about what science is and what science is not and establish the goals of science. Further, we will develop an understanding about what truly is scientific knowledge and the role of creativity and subjectivity in science.

This module consists of 4 lessons and associated inquiry activities, and is expected to take 4 standard class periods. Lesson 1A and Lesson 1B can be taught in the same class period.

Lessons:

1A. Observation and Inference: Inquiry Activity “The Burning Candle”

1B. Defining Science & Its Goals: Inquiry Activity “Mystery Boxes”

2. Scientific Knowledge: Inquiry Activity “Fossil Footprints”

3. Boundaries of Science—What Science Is Not: Inquiry Activity “Of Sunsets, Souls, and Senses”

4. The Role of Subjectivity and Creativity in Science: Inquiry Activity “The Great Fossil Find”

Module 2

Module 2 continues to develop the components of the nature of science and scientific inquiry by putting the student in the role of scientist collecting and analyzing data as they embark on an outdoor scientific investigation at the local wildlife museum. This module is is centered around the fieldtrip, which occurs during lesson 3 and is associated with the Habitat Tracker website and Habitat Tracker iPad application, they are necessary components of the lessons.  Students will learn about the multiple methods of science, understand the role of questions in scientific research, and how data is collected and analyzed to help answer scientific questions.

This module consists of 4 lessons and associated inquiry activities, and is expected to take 7 standard class periods.

Lessons:

1. Learning to Conduct a Scientific Investigation Part 1: Methods of Science & Background

2. Learning to Conduct a Scientific Investigation Part 2: Developing Scientific questions

3. Conducting a Scientific investigation Part 1: Collecting Data

4. Conducting a Scientific Investigation Part 2: Analyzing & Presenting Data

Module 3

Module 3 is where we further the idea of multiple methods of science by exploring what a scientific experiment entails. The module then provides a wrap-up of the components of the nature of science and scientific inquiry, and reflects about how all these aspects are interdependent of each other.

This module consists of 2 lessons and associated inquiry activities and is expected to take 2 standard class periods.

Lessons:

1. Scientific Experiments: Inquiry Activity TBA

2. Wrap Up
